Sound Minds

Music For Development within Young Families

Resounding Joy's Sound Minds program uses music therapy techniques to encourage the use of music for development and bonding between teen parents and their young children (three years old and below) within California School Age Families Education (Cal-SAFE) high school infant centers.

Research has shown that music therapy is successful in promoting listening, cooperative social skills, language development, and motor coordination necessary in a young child's development.

Objectives of Sound Minds Program:

  • Build The Critical Attachment Between a Caregiver and a Child Necessary for the Development of a Child's Cognitive and Behavioral Skills
  • Facilitate Musical Activities to Encourage Interactions Between Parents and Infants
  • Increase School Readiness by Addressing Key Developmental Domains
  • Provide Goal-Orientated Music Experiences to be Used in the Classroom and At-home

Since the first Sound Minds Program was instituted in 2007, at Mark Twain High School, Resounding Joy observed positive outcomes for the teen parents, the children, and the staff involved. Based on this success Resounding Joy has spread the Sound Minds program to other schools across the California education system building positive relationships amongst new families teaching music for development in young children.

Noelle Pederson, MT-BC, Resounding Joy, Inc. Director of Education and Training oversees the Sound Minds programs.
