Dividing
each group session into the following
four percussion / rhythm segments
offers all participants a wide variety
of experiences and establishes session
boundaries:
.
Sharing—ice-breaker activities
bring the group together by encouraging
and building trust among the members.
Gathered in a circle, Joy Receivers
first perform visualization and
deep-breathing exercises to relax
and prepare for the session. Next,
Joy Receivers share their memories
by answering a question, such as
“how did you celebrate a particular
holiday or event when you were younger?”
.
Community and Team Building—warm-up
exercises promote upper- and lower-body
flexibility. Joy Givers lead the
group in musical egg shaking, singing,
and call-and-response rhythm-making,
to use Joy Receivers' names, familiar
poetry, and rhymes.
.
Skill Development—spontaneous
rhythm and drumming exercises invite
group participation and build percussive
skills.
.
Closure—giving each Joy Receiver
an opportunity to strum the Qchord
to his favorite song frames the
group experience with a familiar
final structured activity and allows
the leader to say good-bye to the
group members.

“Supportive
music activities interrupt isolation
and boredom and replace loneliness
with interpersonal communication
and companionship among participants
who might, otherwise, never know
or become friends to one another.”—Jan
Bluemer, Joy Giver |

“Joy
Receivers with dementia have an
opportunity to express their feelings
and emotions through music. They
may not remember a Joy Giver's name
or realize the day of the week,
but when Joy Givers enter the facility,
Joy Receivers know it's time to
have fun with music.”—Ann
Hein, Joy Giver |
