A San Diego woman recognized as one of the top lawyers in the region has joined the board of a nonprofit agency that uses music to help adults and children with special needs.

Renee Schor, a partner in Schor & Freeland LLP, Attorneys at Law, was appointed July 10 by the board of Resounding Joy Inc., a nonprofit agency that provides programs and services throughout San DiegoCounty and beyond.

Dr. Barbara Reuer, executive director of Resounding Joy, said she is pleased that Renee is now a board member.

“Resounding Joy continues to benefit from the insight, experience and support of our directors,” said Reuer, a music therapist who lives in CarmelValley. “Renee’s  compassion for the older adult community and passion for our mission makes for a perfect fit.”

Schor was named one of the region’s Best Lawyers by San Diego Magazine and a Top Attorney by the San Diego Daily Transcipt in 2008 and 2009, and was listed in the 2009 and 2010 Southern California editions of The Best Lawyers in America.

“I am thrilled to be part of an organization that is making such a significant difference in the lives of its clients,” she said.

She and her law partner, Cindy Freeland, formed their employment law firm in November 2007 to help their clients efficiently manage day-to-day personnel matters, give them peace of mind through compliance with employment laws and provide them with legal counsel if legal action or litigation becomes necessary, among other services.

A veteran of more than 18 years in the business, Schor was formerly an employment attorney with Gray, Cary, Ware & Friedenrich and a partner with Baker & McKenzie. She obtained her law degree from University of California Hastings College of the Law and her undergraduate degree from NorthwesternUniversity.

Schor grew up in San Diego and currently lives near the University of San Diego with her husband, Ben Boyd, who teaches running and is a cartoonist.

Resounding Joy uses music to promote the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being of people in many parts of the county, from nursing home residents, elder day-care clients and babies and toddlers of teen parents to people who are homeless and people with HIV/AIDS.

It trains a network of volunteers in the principles of music therapy and partners with many faith-based and community-based organizations, including the Encinitas Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Redwood Elderlink (Escondido), the Third Avenue Charitable Organization (downtown San Diego), and four high schools in San Diego.

Other members of the board are Matt Dolman of Escondido; Rick Hein of Rancho Santa Fe; Jane Kieschnick of Carlsbad; Reuer and Terry Bluemer, of Carmel Valley; and Lou Shook and Ron Ham, of Encinitas.
